30th anniversary of “Return of the Jedi” celebrated at MJC Community Orchestra Concert

(Modesto, CA) –The Modesto Junior College Community Orchestra, directed by Professor Anne Martin, will present a concert celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars film “Return of the Jedi” on Tuesday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Auditorium on East campus. Tickets will be available at the door for $5 general admission and $1 for students and senior citizens.

Storm troopers from the Central California Garrison, a division of the 501st Legion, will make an appearance at the concert. The 501st Legion is a volunteer, non-profit, Star Wars costuming group whose members visit children’s hospitals and charitable organizations, as well as Community Orchestra concerts!

The concert will open with Wagner’s dramatic Kaiser March written to honor German victories against the French in 1870. Wagner uses a musical quotation from the famous hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, and his work uses the full forces of a romantic orchestra. In contrast, the group will then present the English Coventry Carol, composed in the 16th century.

Orchestra members Christine Carr on oboe, Bob Scott on clarinet, Jeff Broumas on French horn and Ashley Burrows on bassoon will be featured as soloists in Mozart’s elegant Sinfonia Concertante.

The brass section will open the second half of the concert with a rousing Fanfare from the ballet La Peri by Paul Dukas. The concert will conclude with an energetic rendition of the famous Star Wars Imperial March and a medley from “Return of the Jedi”.

The orchestra invites you to support local community music by attending the performance. For more information contact Professor Anne Martin at (209) 575-6646, or martina@mjc.edu.
