Art View
By Jim Christiansen

July isn’t just Fireworks, parades and hip, hip, hooray. It’s the Tenth anniversary of the magazine version of Modesto View, celebrated artfully at the Mod Stop/Peer Recovery Art Project Gallery with a ten-year retrospective show of Modesto View covers July 15 to August 15. It is also Stanislaus County Fair time, and they always have an art display. Current shows up at Mistlin Gallery, include the Can 2 Canvas Spray Can Art Show, the Central California Art Association Summer Splash Show, and the Alternative Techniques Class show. If that’s not enough to get you to peer in the windows, John Wynn’s photographs in the featured spot by the front doors.

It’s plenty hot during July, so cool off with one of the Summer Splash Paint Along, and enjoy the air conditioning, and for $40 per session food, beverage, painting. For July that will be July 7, painting with acrylics, and July 14, make a collage. Sign up at the Gallery, or call 209 529-3369.

The Chartreuse Muse will host its New and Emerging Artists Show July and August. I’m one of the juried in artists. Reception will be held during Art Walk July 21. The artwork of Carol David will be on display at the Carolyn Huff Gallery July 1st through July 29th. An artist reception for Carol David during the Modesto Art Walk, on Thursday, July 21, from 5-9 pm. The Carolyn Huff Gallery is located at 1224 K St. (corner of 13th and K), in downtown Modesto. Gallery hours are Tues-Wed-Fri 11-5 pm, Thursdays 1-6 pm, and third Thursdays 1-9 pm.

You may have noticed Downtown Modesto Market is same time as Third Thursday Art Walk. Not to worry, so is MoBand, but there has been some turnout, and talk of adding of crafters and artists to the mix to complete the vision of more than the relocated Farmers Market we love Thursday and Saturday mornings. Current block seems to be fees, but there is rumor the booth fees will be $30 for artist/crafter hobbyists, but as to the other requirements, and who one applies to, still bit of a mystery to the Art View Columnist. Contact Downtown Partnership, or Marie Uber at Modesto Certified Farmers Market to see what is involved.

On my Art, I’m my own Mercenary Graphics poster contractor helping produce Jen Eros’s “Just Kidding” comedy series at Ralston’s Goat. Comedy Show opens after Downtown Market and Art Walk close. Third show is July 21, and we’ve had great turnout, so you want to grab a seat early, or make reservations. To help the upscale Art effort of DoMo Market, we have an art preview at Ralston’s Goat including our Comedy Showcase Headliner Rick Pulido. Rick is a well-known Comic with extensive bio, but also accomplished photographer and artist. Check it out! Comedy Show follows art walk with doors open at 9, $5 cover for the show. Check Rick’s web site at Website rickpulido.com/

Merced Art Hop comes up in July, as well as Second Saturday in Sonora, First Friday in Lodi, and events at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock. Support local artists, and buy original art.
