Food & Drink
IT IS ALWAYS TIME TO EAT AND DRINK!
This is top of our list at most any time. You may have eaten about 20 minutes ago, but the right thing may make you eat again. There is a huge menu of great restaurants in Modesto, some big, some small. We especially like the downtown restaurants that are in walking distance from the theaters, clubs, the State and the Gallo Center. We try to expose most of the good restaurants, give chef tips, interviews and secret recipes. We will also keep you up to date on local coffee shops and great cocktail spots.

O’Brians Tavern
O’Brians Tavern By Kate Serpa O’Brian’s Tavern was, up until this past week, completely off the radar for me. I had never previously been, and being the 95 year-old woman I often feel myself to be, I didn’t feel myself too inclined to try someplace new. How then do I adequately describe the fantastic welcoming [...]
Buddy’s Pub – NightView
By Kate Serpa I hadn’t heard about Buddy’s until recently when a friend of mine told me about a bar with a great tap selection and a lax rule on throwing peanut shells on the ground. My initial thought was: in Modesto? I haven’t heard of such a place. I’m a bit on the arrogant [...]
You Bet Your Glass It’s Important
VinoView By Brad Gibson For as much as America has become a wine drinking nation, it amazes me how many very nice restaurants have inappropriate or poor quality wine glasses or stemware or how often the glass smells like bleach or detergent. While you may not have any control over the glass you get when [...]

Step Inside Fuzio!
By Kate Serpa I have walked past Fuzio Universal Bistro a number of times, however I have never, until today, been inside. Why? I had always assumed it was A) a chain, B) an Italian restaurant, and C) probably pretentious. As I am a creature of habit, I never saw any reason to venture in. [...]

The Moon Shines Over Modesto
By Greg Cobb A basement inspires the imagination of many young minds. It’s a place where a single light bulb may hang with a dangling chain to turn on and off the light. For Lee Palleschi, Master Distiller and owner of Valley Spirits of Modesto, a basement was where his passion began and now thrives [...]

VinoView: Ordering Wine at a Restaurant
By Brad Gibson For a lot of people ordering wine at a restaurant is an anxious and intimidating time with too many choices and unfamiliar names. Was that a good year? Will the wine go with the food? Why are you giving me the cork? Understanding the process can eliminate the anxiety and leave the [...]
NightView: Galletto
By Kate Serpa When given a wine list at a restaurant, I usually close my eyes as discreetly as possible and haphazardly point something out near the top of the page. Unsurprisingly, this has continuously resulted in poor wine choices. The wine culture, I will admit, has always made me feel completely out of the [...]
