Give the Gift of Zen

The end of the year can be a bit taxing on us, even though it is also full of visits from friends and family, gift-giving, quality time and lots of food.

This chica definitely needed an afternoon of relaxation in preparation for the bustle of the holiday season, so I tried out Mystic Body and Soul in Modesto, owned by Lyn Ross, on the suggestion of a friend.

Making my appointment was easy, and was asked to arrive a few minutes early to fill out a questionnaire about my health and my appointment goals. Walking up to the building you wouldn’t think it was a sanctuary of relaxation, but you immediately become engulfed in soft lighting, the scent of essential oils, and get greeted by friendly staff when you step in. Curtains or paintings adorn every inch of the walls so you feel like a goddess in a temple. I was offered tea by everyone I encountered. I had green tea during all my treatments, which was truly delicious.

I started with my therapeutic massage, which was by Lyn. For a blissful hour I left all my cares in that office and was transported to an eastern hide-away. She will also work on releasing your chakras if she feels you need it, and will do some light reflexology in the midst of the massage.

I was wrapped in a warm robe and moved to the skincare room, where Annaliesa gave me a facial, which was a massage complete with a moisturizing mask and some extractions and even a scalp massage! A warm humidifier/steamer was placed near me, keeping the room dreamily warm while I was worked on.

Once I was moisturized and fully relaxed, I was lead to the pedicure room, where warm soapy water was already waiting for me. I sat in the massage chair and waited for my pedicurist to comment on my unshaven legs that I purposefully did not shave, to test the professionalism of the office. Not a blink or comment, she went right to work on my legs and toes. Awarded an “A+”, she then chatted with me about my plans for the day and weekend, showing me some nail colors. I picked a gun-metal grey, which would match anything in my closet.

I was left to dress and come back to reality, before heading back to the lobby to pay for the “new me”. I passed a wide assortment of their famous teas, herbs and candles, and many different natural products for hair, skin, nails or the whole body. Everything smelled heavenly!

If you’re looking for some pampering for yourself or a loved one, you can find all kinds of relaxing services here to do just that! Give a gift card with a bottle of lotion, buy some tea to go with a mug, or just come in to get some healing for you. Their slogan is “Just a beautiful place to be!” and they mean that! It was lovely to be in such a beautiful place for a whole afternoon!
