MAMA View BY Middagh Goodwin

Is it June already? We are half way through the year, you have just celebrated Graduation either for yourself or a love one and yes it is Summer. The start of Summer in Modesto means Graffiti (American Graffiti that is) Classic Cars, Music and lots of good times. Modesto has already had some great bands come through town this year, Guttermouth, MoFo Party Band, Y&T, The Toasters, Lydia Loveless, Annabella Lwin, American Head Charge, The Creepshow, J Boog, Angry Samoans and Reverend Horton Heat just to name a few.

Summer is tour season and over the next few months things are only going to heat up and I am not just talking about the temperature.

Here are a few events happening in the Modesto area that feature MAMA winners or nominees. Tuesday the 3rd at the Brewhouse, Old Man Markley(Fat Wreck Chords) whose 2nd album “Downside Up” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass charts, they are often described as Banjo Punk: they will be joined by Dandelion Massacre(2011 Alt Indie) and Water Tower(Americana from the North West.) Wednesday the 4th at the Brewhouse METALACHI(the World’s first and only Mariachi Metal Band) returns to Modesto to perform all your favorite Metal Hits, joining them will be Triple D and special guest you do not want to miss this over the top Rock and Roll show. Saturday the 7th Madie Boyd(2013 Americana), Indian Runner and the Cerny Brothers play the Brewhouse Alt Rock and Americana at it’s best.

Over at the Cow Track you can catch one of the best acts Modesto has, House of Orange(2011 Americana) with Juno Circus and more. At Twin Rivers catch the Pain on the Grass Concert with Devour the Day, Framing Hanley, Hit&Run(2012 Rock) and more. Friday the 13th at the Brewhouse, Modesto’s prodigal Rocker Willie Hines performs with his Band (you might remember Willie from the Lights or Jet Red.) WHB are celebrating the release of their new album “Whatever” they are joined by The Josh Rosenblum Band (2012 Pop Rock.)

Over at the Other Place catch The Notalauts, Broken Trojan(2013 Rock), Them Creature, Screeching Slay and the Neckrobats and hosted by Slay(2013 Comedy.) for a night of Horror, Rock and Fun. Friday the 20th the Brew Ha Ha at The Brewhouse Modesto’s longest running Comedy series returns with some of the area’s finest, headlining the night of Laughs is Saul Trujillo one of the funniest people in the 209 joined by Chris Cruz, Hence Singleton, Griffin Daley(the saucy Brit), and hosted by Jimmie Menezes.

If Comedy is not your thing what about a night of Rockin’ Blues? Big Earl & the Cryin’ Shame(2009 Blues) join the MoFo Party Band(2005 Blues) at the Prospect Theater. Monday the 23rd head on up to Jamestown to catch Dandelion Massacre as part of their summer tour at the Gypsy Shack with I Kill Cameron and C.A.F. Saturday the 21st come on out to the Brewhouse for a night of great Alt Rock with Renegade Conspiracy, Comacova and Table For Five these bands do not disappoint.

If you have not been to the fabulous State Theatre in awhile do yourself a favor and stop in, they have made some improvements in recent months a brand new state of the art digital projector and marquee out front. Each year the MAMA Awards are hosted at the state and it is one of the gems of the Central Valley. On a side note: For those over 21 while you are at a show at the Brewhouse don’t forget to grab a pint of St. Stan’s Graffiti Wheat. The Graffiti Wheat was a Summer Tradition and it is back on Tap along with the award winning Red Sky Ale.

Make plans to catch Joan Jett July 19th at the Stanislaus Fair, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Monkey and Before Twenty July 24 and Left Alone, The Interrupters, Peaceable Jones and Terrible Timing July 26th at the Brewhouse.
