HERE IS WHERE YOU START:
As a Modestan, or even as a visitor to ModestoView.com, There are some main groups to which you should pay attention so you can get your voice heard and make a difference.

First, the Modesto City Council.
These people are your elected officials setting the policies and the plan for our city. They react to your, yes you the citizen, guidance. Stay tuned to the issues. For the more recent or upcoming city council agenda, click here:

To email the entire council at once, click the "E-mail the Council" button in the right margin.

Second, The Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors
These people play a huge role in the the lives of Modestans. See what they are doing that affects your life and make sure that you are hooked up in the issues. You can check out the Board of Supes meeting agenda and issues right here.

Read the text of the 2006 State of the County right here.

Third, State Politicians: These people can help us.
Senator Denham: senator.denham@sen.ca.gov
Senator Poochigian: senator.poochigian@sen.ca.gov
Assemblyman Aghazarian: assemblymember.aghazarian@assembly.ca.gov
Assemblymen Cogdill: assemblymember.cogdill@assembly.ca.gov

Elections are in Season
Election 2005 is over. We have a new council makeup that includes Kristen Olsen. What will the new councilbe like? Will we have a council that is protecting the people of Modesto, protecting our farmland, projecting our vision of what we can be, promoting our job creation, promoting our roads and transportation needs? Will your elected officials do what you want. Do you know what they stand for? Did you learn enough about the candidates before the election? Post your comments.

LEAD THOUGHTS - Here are some things to think about and take action!

Shape the Future of Modesto
There are a variety of ways that you can make Modesto the city you want. You can get on a city committee or you can volunteer for NEAT teams and many other things. You can work with other citizens and professionals to build a plan for the future and save the city some consultant bucks and put the future of the city in your hands. Click here to read the latest draft of the Citizens Downtown Blueprint Committe. This was all done without one single dime of consulatant expense. Tip a pint just for that bit of good news. Well, what are you waitng for Read the Blueprint. Read the official city planning document here.

Solutions and Ideas
You can’t complain without a solution so here we go. The committee process has failed us and needs to be fixed. Many of these details, terms and conditions that are being “discovered” and batted around during the council sessions should be discovered and handled in the committee sessions, which are public meetings and are accessible to all people concerned. Committees should emerge with recommendations to the council and be able to support the data and the decisions. A committee recommendation should really mean something. What you you think? Email us right now. Post your thoughts about this now.

Where have all the Moderates Gone?
All we hear is the shouting from the right or the whining from the left and the whimpering of each side if either one of the others cries foul or tries to beat each other at the same game. Problem is, all of these issues are the key stones of the extremes and only the people shouting are the ones that really care. Read More >> Post your thoughts about this now.

Commercial Homelessness
Modesto has an epidemic of professional homeless people. You know the ones on the corners by the freeway that will "work for food" but won't or don't. Asking for a handout while smoking a cigarette, that costs fifty cents each, when an entire day of food can be purchased for $1.00 at the local Save Mart. Protect Your Identity
People think that doing commerce on the internet is dangerous. The nano seconds that your credit card leaps through the twisted web enroute to Gap or Amazon is nothing compared to the danger of showing off your health care card. The most dangerous number in the hands of a thief is your Social Security number. People steal identities which costs you much more than money. You may be responsible for bad checks and loans in another state and may never know about it. Don't let people rip you off. Learn more. Post your thoughts about this now.

Make the System Work!
Issues that come before the council that are not prepared should be sent back to committee or staff to make ready for a discussion and decision. Is there a previous written agreement or not? Are there pertinent details that need to be displayed? If we can’t find the answer, the issue needs to come back before it is ready, or should have not gotten on the agenda in the first place. Brilliant thought huh? Post your thoughts about this now.

Idea number 2
hfiasurqwnlkahdoi jeiqweoqiudq. Does this mean anything to you? Me either. Although they are much better and a new printer friendly version is on the city website, agendas are confusing, written in "cityglyphics" they do not provide clues to what they are when referencing planning and zoning issues. Section II, part B, version 4, does not help a citizen become aware, when all you really have to say is “The eating area outside a restaurant in at 10th Street Place” Need some translation help on some of these. Tell us about your favorite gbberish.

We can do better
We can make the Modesto City Council a better place to do the people’s business and we are all waiting the genius and progress that was promised in the last election to become visible. Watch or go to the council and make your own decisions. Who will be our next leaders? Maybe it is you? The election is coming. Are you doing your part?

Is Tuesday night still the same ?
The situation at the Modesto City Council is interesting. We have a new composition on our city council. The meetings may not be as entertaining, but have we been getting the business of our city done? Are we be a community that is easy to do business with? Are we consistent and firm? Will we be smarter in our dealings with developers and planners? Is development paying it's way? Have we encouraged retail and residential living in downtown? Are we fixing our transportation system? If so, how will we pay for it. The answers to these and other exciting questions can be found at the City Council meetings. Click here to email the city council members or to post a comment on this situation.Post your thoughts about this now.

"The Old Regime"
This phrase is used with negative connotations in today’s bickering and blaming world. In Modesto’s case, the Old Regime represents vision. Thanks to the “old regime”, we have a new Downtown, excitement, redevelopment and a city that now has a proud center. The verdict is in, Downtown Redevelopment and 10th Street Place worked and continues to make our city better. But did we gloss over the Village One fees? Did we forget to make sure the proper plans were in place or did we get the best deals? We need to remember to look forward and see what our city will be five and ten years from now. Ask yourself, what would downtown be like if today’s council made yesterday’s decisions. Comments on this? comments@modestoview.com or post them directly here.
