Jazz BluesView: Back to Business
By Eric Benson

Well now is the time to get back to living our lives and getting on with our bad selves! I walked into a store wearing a mask and the grocer said you don’t have to wear a mask! I retorted yes they make it hard to breathe, itches your moustache, hard to read facial expressions and taking it off said: “and it hides my beautiful face!” Yes, a little levity is in order after surviving a friggin global pandemic! I think we should hire a comedian just to get us all back in the groove. I think it is too soon to sing “Happy Days are Here Again” but I am optimistic that things “are getting better all the time, can’t get worse.” Music and arts are in-store and people are hungry for getting back to being together, I have had more hugs in the last month than the whole last year!

We are trying to do more live events outside with social distancing to keep people safer and inside shows with smaller capacity at Ralston’s Goat, Downtown Bauer’s and Café Urbano. The monthly Blues Crawl returns Sunday, July 25th with Eric Benson and Big Earl Mathews promoting this event. The headliner for June is The Chris Cain Band at Café Urbano with an all-star band. outside show: 25 dollar cover charge. RSVP: (209) 918-7033, Eric Benson. The other venues are Ralston’s Goat & Downtown Bauer’s with bands to be announced. All are outside venues within walking distance in downtown Modesto with food and beverage available all age venues! Can’t stop the Blues!

Café Urbano continues with live music: Sunday shows, and Blue Monday Party with Jam session July 12th. The Blue Monday Band features John Adey & Conrad Johnson Bass, Dave Hawks Drums, Andrew Rosenblum Sax, Kevin Marin Trumpet, John Burt Sax and Dave Dow & Eric Benson keys playing Jazz, Funk, R & B, Latin and the Blues.   Urbanos also has DJ events Salsa, cumbia on Taco Tuesdays, also Thursday through Sunday for DJ Latin dancing with great food and a full bar so come on down.

Well, folks, thanks to all you good people doing the right thing, wearing masks, social distancing and getting that Soul Vaccination things are continuing to improve.  We also need to support our local business and economy, so they continue to stay healthy also, so please continue to support our local venues.

A little shout out to one of the Valley’s young lions of music Raul Ontiveros. I met Raul at Dave Dow’s Jazz jam, Raul was tearing it up on the Trombone, then switching to Bass. Raul hails from the small town of Grayson CA, where music was part of the family. At the suggestion of his brother, he started playing Bass with the main influence Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Influenced by some of the Funk and Soul players like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, RHCP, and Youtube creators such as Davie 504, Adam Neely and especially Jacob Collier. Raul Also plays Jazz, Rock, Blues and fusion music and teaches music on Bass, Trombone, Guitar and piano. Raul performs with Ivory Flats, Josh Rosenblum Band and Blue Monday Band as well as the Jazz Jam Ralston’s Goat Thursday nights. Raul teaches professionally now at Guitar Center Modesto, you can call them and ask for him by name if interested. Check him out online by his stage name Raul Slaps, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Spotify and of course Tiktok! And when asked “Beatles or Stones?” Raul “Beatles… they changed the world.” You will hear more of Raul, if you need a dependable great musician give him a holler!

Well, folks thanks to all you good people doing the right thing, wearing masks, social distancing and getting that Soul Vaccination, things are improving. Remember to reach out and be kind as a lot of us struggling right now, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. We also need to support our local business and economy, so it is still there as things continue to improve. So please continue to support our local venues.

Peace out, Eric Benson! Need to get me or co-conspire with me, the cell is (209) 918-7033 And be like Alpha Beta and tell a friend.

Well folks this is the new norm with things opening and improving! The promise of spring gives me optimism for brighter days ahead, “the smile’s returning to there faces…here comes the sun, here comes the sun.” This song played in hospitals when someone with a Covid infection has survived and able to go home. We now have 50,000 positive cases with a low mortality rate so now is the time to get your vaccination! Do this for yourself, do this to protect others, and do it so there is not a reservoir for the infection that the virus can turn into a new strain. 2020 we were supposed to wear masks, 2021 we are still wearing masks because we did not do the right thing the first time around. Much love for you out there that are doing the right thing wearing masks and social distancing. In the meantime, keep going and stay healthy and keep things rolling!

There are a lot of us struggling right now, emotionally, physically, and spiritually so please reach out and lend a hand to those who need it. We also need to support our local business and economy, so it is still there as things improve. Next month we will conspire to get people out to our local businesses, restaurants to keep them healthy. If we have no venues when things get better you will see me out on south 9th street busking with my guitar singing the Blues. So please continue to support our local venues.

My friend Dylan Soto drummer for many bands in the area is doing a Fundraiser for his long time childhood friend Quincy. She has recently developed Leukemia and is in the hospital for treatment. We will be doing an event outside at Café Urbano Sunday, March 14th from 3 to 7 pm to raise funds for her. We encourage all to come and support live music and Quincey, she also has a GoFundMe page for those who want to help.

Blue Monday Party out of Lockdown at Café Urbano Monday, March 8th with special guest Barry Finnerty guitarist form Miles Davis Band and many others. Also in March, the Chris Cain Band returns Sunday, March 21st for a 4 PM show outside. Urbano also has DJ events Salsa, cumbia on Taco Tuesdays, also Thursday through Sunday for DJ Latin dancing with great food and a full bar.

By Eric Benson

Alright my peeps time for all of us to get our Soul Vaccination. Tower of Power said it best; “All across the nation people been catch’ honkypox, when you get the notion Towers’s got the potion-you might look in to get yourself in motion…Everybody get in line.. soul vaccination for mo better health. Part of our soul protection plan. Get ready for the injection to cut down on the infection cause soon we’ve got soul perfection!”. I got my COVID vaccination and oh yes my arm ached and I got an “owee’ but I took on for the team. At this point, we have to vaccinate ourselves out of this situation so we can get back to our live’s pre-COVID. 2020 we were supposed to wear masks, 2021 we are still wearing masks because we did not do the right thing the first time around. Much love for you out there that are doing the right thing wearing masks and social distancing. In the meantime keep ‘er going and stay healthy and keep on because we must believe brighter days ahead and do the right thing so they will be coming.

This is new terrain get the vaccine out to all of us so that herd immunity happens, and yes we are the herd! If enough are vaccinated they will be no reservoir for infection.

There are a lot of us struggling right now, emotionally, physically and spiritually so please reach out and lend a hand to those who need it. We also need to support our local business and economy so it is still there when things improve. Next month we will conspire to get people out to our local businesses, restaurants to keep them healthy. If we have no venues when things get better you will see me out on south 9th street busking with my guitar singing the Blues. So please continue to support our local venues. We are still not supposed to do live music inside venues but we will try and do outside music in the downtown ASAP so you do not have to visit me in Belview!. Miss all my peeps and a shout out to the Blue Monday Band; Dave Dow Piano, David Hawks Drums, John Adey and Conrad Johnson Bass, Andrew Rosenblum Sax, John Burt Sax and all the special guests and fans that continue to play the music. Well, 2020 certainly has been one of the most challenging years I have ever lived through bar none, With COVID, extreme heat, California on fire but sometimes you just got to roll with it. I continue to suspend disbelief and keep going forward. My job as a Nurse Practitioner has added new apparel, a face shield. Now I wear a mask which steams up my glasses with the shield with glasses I bump into things often! I am looking for a gown and purse to see the whole attire off. Well a bit of optimism because we need that right now, The good news is the vaccine has arrived! And yes I am ready to roll up my sleeve and get er done. I encourage all to get it when available as herd immunity by vaccine or exposure is the only way back to the new normalcy. Also, we all need to think of others, wearing a mask slows the spread for me but also those at risk for serious outcomes if exposed.

We also need to try and keep our businesses healthy but supporting them, getting gift certificates so that when things improve, we have a healthy business section to return to. My home for the music Blue Monday and all the others shows we do there is Café Urbano. I encourage people who are music fans to support them as well as other venues in the downtown, Ralston’s Goat, Bauers Downtown and others. So while it seems that a lot of us are getting coal in our stockings the truth is that as the good book said, “this too shall pass.” So I wish you all a continued prosperity and optimism that things will get better soon if we all stay the course and do the right thing.

As we are still in the purple, lockdown we will try and do events as to comply at Café Urbano inside, outside wherever we need to make it happen! Shout out to all the great musicians and groups that make it happen, Latin Flavor Band, Texas Funk, Blue Monday Party, DJ Mende who spins on weekends, RJ Hass Band /Santana Tribute, and the mighty Chris Cain Band. We will persevere!.

Happy Hollidaze! Well we are marshalling on with life and the music. Covid, extreme heat, California’s on fire and me, “lets jam out.” Not to minimalize the incredible hardship we are all going through but we have to continue to live our lives while also making sure everyone stays safe and healthy. Had my first COVID test as one of my fellow employees came to work sick and tested positive, so please don’t come to work sick folks! It felt like a red hot poker being stuffed up my nose by a sadistic nurse, and afterward”, have a nice day!” I tested negative and plan it keep it that way. Oh either I am losing it or levity is in order. When I think my job is tough seeing paramedics in masks all day I ponder? The guy is on the ground gasping for air and their by the van in a huddle drawing strawing to see who does mouth to mouth resuscitation. “If I help you sir might be a good day for death…a two for one special.” And wearing a mask and the annoyance factor, it is hard to breath, itches your face, hard to read fascial expressions but the biggest problem is you can’t see my “beautiful face.” And meeting people these days…sitting on a park bench girl walks up “sir can you take off your mask so I can see your face?” guys lowers his mask…”okay you can put it back on… I was just checking.” I think myself esteem is suffering a bit, I went to Smart & Final and tried to walk in, the security guard said”you can’t come in without a mask.” I said oh your worried about COVID?’ He said no…”your ugly.” So I left and driving on the freeway and I see the sign “drunk drivers spotted call this number to report.” So I pulled over and turned myself in.

On to the business at hand. We are back in the purple, or back in lockdown but we are adapting to keep er goin!. Café Urbano is continuing to have Latin dancing with DJ every Friday and Saturday night and adding a new DJ Thursdays to keep things rolling. We will be doing Blue Monday December 14th and 28th inside, outside on the roof top wherever it is okay to play. Will be bringing in some special guests for the Christmas shows, Barry Finnerty of Miles Davis Band, maybe Chris Cain and a few others that I have to confirm. The Blue Monday Band features Dave Hawks Drums, John Adey & Conrad Johnson Bass, Andrew Rosenblum & John Burt Sax, Dave Dow, Eric Benson Keys & Pat Governor Organ.

On a business note please continue to support our local venues as once they fail and close down it will effects all of us.

Well folks we made it to the red zone, Yippie!. This meaning we are having a smaller number of Covid cases in our county and we have a green light to opening ibusiness in our city. This is a good thing to get us back to normalcy. For music this means restaurants can have 25% of capacity inside or continue to have events outside. For Café Urbano we will be doing smaller events inside and larger ones outside. It is getting cold but I won’t complain, a friend who complained of no gigs where he lives. I said well just take it outside, he retorted that in Nebraska in outlying areas there is 20 feet of snow!

In the meantime we got to keep er rollin! Doing music indoors and outdoors at some venues so come on down peeps. Music venues offering music outdoors: Bauers Downtown, Ralston’s Goat, Café Urbano and others. Please support the Restaurants and businesses that are open and need your support. Let keep things rolling and keep our business, and ourselves healthy.

Please take time to take care of yourself and others as times are tough but they will get better. but we need to take care of ourselves and each other right now. We will weather this too, but in the meantime, stay safe but live your life to the fullest.

A lot of business are having outside seating to accommodate folks and keep everyone safe. Café Urbano is no different we will be doing shows outside to keep everyone safe, and the music going. We need all our fans to come out in this difficult time to get on with life as ah, unusual!.

On the November calendar for Café Urbano: Blue Monday Party 9th and the 23rd, Blue Monday Band with special guests. Jazz/Blues View: Gettin’ Crazy Up in Here!
By Eric Benson

Well, things are really challenging my ability to stay calm, “La Fiesta de Masque 2nd to COVID, extreme heat, and now California is on fire. I am an optimist but man if a Tsunami rolls in I am getting a surfboard and I am gone. A lot of my peeps in the community are having a hard time whether having been furloughed, unemployed, and the worst to come – homeschooling their children on ZOOM. Yikes! Now is the time to reach out for support and keep things rollin’ even if this is the not so new normal, we must go on.
And one of my favorite cats, the real deal Don McCaslin Senior has passed at 93 years of age. The father of Santa Cruz Jazz RIP. I met Don on a summer day 1980 rollin’ downtown Santa Cruz with long hair and my John Lennon spectacles and was transfixed on this languid tall hippie with an Apple hat playing the vibraphone with the band, flower children dancing on the sidewalk and folks taking in the scene. I perched myself next to Don and after a tune, he turned, smiled and asked, ”Do you play?” I mentioned to him I play the piano. “Do you want to sit in?” he had asked. Don gestured, ”Play something you know.” I remember saying, “Well, Don… I don’t know nothing.” Don smiles, “Well let’s play the Blues…you can’t get lost there.” He ushered me to the piano and I hung on for dear life pounding out chords and overplaying. When it was over he stood me up and had the crowd clap for me and said: ”Did good ‘youngblood’ and nobody got hurt!” From then on I was drawn to this band with Don, whose band was Warmth because “We need more warmth in the world.” I sat in with Don at Severino’s a lounge when he was now 93 years old, and although he did not remember my name he said, ”I remember you …buy me a drink!” I sang in Autumn leaves in a horrible key for me but when done he gave me the same unconditional support that he gave to countless over the years, “Sounded good, thanks for the music!” And so it goes, thank you, Don, for the love, the support, for the encouragement to a hungry you musician that needed to play and thanks for the music!. A side note Don gave up teaching age 40 and spent the next 53 years playing an average of 5 or more gigs a week, he lived for the music and the music lived in him and his fans.
Please take a minute to reach out to the vulnerable and those that are not doing well, imagine being homeless right now. Times are tough but they will get better, but we need to take care of ourselves and each other right now. We will weather this too but in the meantime, stay safe but live your life to the fullest.
Well, the show must go on folks and we need to be creative to keep life and the music and life going forward.  A lot of businesses are having outside seating to accommodate folks and keep everyone safe. Café Urbano is back in business and we will be doing shows outside and keep the music going. We need all our fans to come out in this difficult time to get on with life as ah; unusual!.
On the calendar for Café Urbano September: 14th and 29th the Blue Monday Party continues hosting the Jam. In the band John Adey Bass Dave Hawks drums, Andrew Rosenblum Sax, John Burt Sax and keys Dave Dow and Eric Benson. The downbeat at 7 and goes till 10 PM for listening and dancing.
