PLAY BALL!

By MJ Mangano

“Take me out to the Ballgame” Many of us get excited when April comes around, but not only for the beautiful weather, but the start of Baseball season. Already the A’s and Giants have shown up to spring training back in February and plans are to start the season in April. No More fan cutouts! The A’s and Giants have spent much of the offseason developing plans to safely welcome fans back to the parks in 2021 later in the season.

As far as the Nuts this year, last week the Mariners acquired 100% of the team’s franchise, taking over for HWS Baseball, which had owned the Nuts since 2005. They will be playing at John Thurman Field this year in a division now called “Low-A West”; The Modesto Nuts are opening the season at home against the Stockton Ports on May 4. Go Nuts.

Now we are in the red tier more sport will be taking place; high school baseball has issues there is scheduling and Covid 19 restriction; best to check the high schools for more info. Modesto now is allowing youth and adult sports leagues to resume play at city parks based on updated COVID-19 restrictions. The City of Modesto is now accepting reservations for the following fields Beyer Community Park softball fields, Davis Community Park hardball and softball fields. As of now, places like Rainbow field are open just for team conditioning, but they believe they should open in April for softball leagues. More parks are planning on opening, so you should contact the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department, at 209-577-5344 for more info. “So yeah grab me some peanuts and crackerjacks (and a beer or two) and let me root for the home team!

Creating your own Photo Memory Wall for Under $25
By Michael Mangano `

Like most of us we have been trap within four walls for some time now, so why not make one a memory wall of a great trip, a fun family vacation, a summer of concerts or a family reunion. I have one of the concerts I photographed and when I am feeling a bit down I look at and make my heart a bit lighter: especially now with no concerts happening. So let’s brighten up a space in your home; it can be in the family room or maybe over your desk. A memory wall can be a great family DIY project to do and it doesn’t have to cost allot. The biggest expense of hanging photos can be framed, but I will show you some ideas on how to create a photo wall with no frames and cost under $25. So for this memory wall, I created was my first time photographing the San Francisco Giants. It was a dream come true moment for me and was able to share it with my girlfriend.
So pretty much everything you see here cost $25
(except for the collector bat and signed ball I added later)

1. Clip Lights I got at Amazon for $8 ( you also use regular close pins and hang string lights)

2. The cooling sheets and clips bought a dollar store $4 ( you can order them on Amazon but will cost more or you can also order a grid pane fro $26l)

3. Photo printed Walgreen $5

4. Hanging wire and hooks $7

( I found using the wall hook worked better than nails to keep racks in place)

I first hung the cooling sheet with nails, but as I mention the wall picture hooks held the racks in place better. I use the wire to hang the lights and the bat in place. Then finally I superglue a hanging hook to the back of my baseball case and added to the wall.

Finally, hang your photos and there you have it your own Memory wall.

I found working on this project with my girlfriend brought up great stories and memories. So if you feel like those walls closing in makes one with a great memory that can bring a smile on your face to brighter your day.

Here are more memory wall ideas that don’t use frame and cost the user $20 or things you may have around your house. Almost everything can be ordered on Amazon.

1. Fishing net 7-10
2. Small clipboards (pack of 12) $15 you can paint them different colors
3. Wall Grid Panel $20 to $30
4. Driftwood or branches $0 to $15
5. Chalkboard wallpaper $10 to $25
6. Old Bike wheel. If you have one laying around be a great way to share your bike ride adventure.

The library available far from exhaustive but you will be able to see a lot of what the CW has been showing recently. In addition, there is an app called CW Seed which lets you watch entire seasons of old shows (like Pushing Daisies or Whose Line is it Anyway) without any subscription at all.

I would recommend adding a few of these channel/app so you have more options of what to watch.

Hello, I am a photographer for Modesto view magazine. I have the privilege to record moments in time I think to represent the best in our city. You can say I am a voyeur of our community spirit. Here at the View we always like to look forward, but I do believe we should take a moment and see where we were as to how far we have come together. So another year is in the books! And what a year it was. Modesto saw a lot of action in 2019 from new business opening up downtown, too our own outdoor venue. In 2019 I saw record crowds coming out to celebrate events like parades in the streets or music on our porches and parks; rain or shine I saw a lot of community pride. Oh, we are not a perfect city I know we still have a ways to go, but I do think we have a lot of people out there who care about our city and for that I know we have a brighter future ahead. I look forward to 2020 and hold pride to say I’m “Made in Modesto”. Here are some great moments of 2019.

Friday night was the final show of the season at BASA Nationwide Fruit yard Amphitheater and there was something for every music fan. It was a beautiful night and a packed house as America took the stage. It’s easy to forget how many hits they have accumulated since 1970. Nearly every one of those hits was played: “Sister Golden Hair,” “A Horse With No Name,” “I Need You,” “Woman Tonight.” Every song sounded great, with the harmonies of founders Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell on “Ventura Highway”. Beatles collaborator George Martin-produced hits “Sister Golden Hair” and “Lonely People” were terrific. Covers of “Eleanor Rigby” and the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreaming” were loved by the crowd. Beckley moved to piano for a lovely “Only in Your Heart.”

It definitely a night for classic soft rock as Michael McDonald took the stage next; he played hits from his solo career as well as works he created with the Doobie Brothers; like “Here to Love you” , “Real Love”,” Minute by Minute” and ended with “Takin’ it to the Streets”. McDonald treated the crowd with songs covering Marvin Gays and Kenny Loggins. For the encore, he sang Gaye’s “What’s Going On”.

The whole night an excited crowd sang along as they swayed back and forth to both bands collection of hits. It was a wonderful night and a great show to put an exclamation mark to Modesto newest outdoor venue’s 2019 season.

Speical thank you to Joe Traina and Don Bean for putting this venue in our back yard and Richter Entertainment Group for giving us a summer of some great music.. Til next year!

Billy Currington hit the stage full of energy, and he never once lost that enthusiasm at the sold out show at The BasiNationwide Amphitheater at the Fruit Yard on September 20.

Currington didn’t want seats, but a pit, so the audience was on their feet for the 90 min show. It was a fast paced show from the first song to the last. He did less small talk and got right to singing! It didn’t matter whether it was an old or new song, the crowd was dancing and singing alongword-for-word as Currington danced and swayed along with them.

The country singer/songwriter has released six studio albums and has scored eleven career No.1 singles, most recently “Don’t Hurt Like It Used To.” His other hits that reached the No. 1 spot include such memorable songs as “Good Directions,” “Let Me Down Easy,” “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right,” “People Are Crazy,” “That’s How Country Boys Roll,” “Hey Girl,” and “We Are Tonight.”It felt like listening to a country mix tape of hits!

Local Ryan Scripps, once a contestant of the Voice, opened up for Currington. Scripps and his band did a nice job warming up the crowd on a beautiful Friday Night. @richterentertainment #REG #fruityard #Billycarrington #katcountry103

Blake Shelton “Friends and Hero’s” tour
Photos & Story By Michael J Mangano

There is a neon light at the end of the tunnel where some good ole boys were waiting to entertain the crowd at the SAP Center 25-year celebration. The three-day festival was outside and there were rides, vendors, classic cars, and live music from Talented Up. The night-time the event featured Blake Shelton, Hunter Hayes, and Devin Dawson. The following days had Kings of the West, Snoop Dog & Ice Cube, and Maluma, to close out Sunday.

But Friday was all country, and to kick off the night the Center flew in Grace Kelly, a sixteen-year-old New-Zealand born singer/songwriter, who spent time growing up in San Jose, and sang her song, “My Love Letter to San Jose”. Country singer and songwriter and Orangevale native Devin Dawson followed. He did a 30 minute set with songs like “Dark Horse”, and “All on Me” which reached the Top 5 on the Hot Country Songs. Michael Hardy came on stage with Dawson to sing his hit song “Rednecker”. Then the high-energy of Louisiana native Hunter Hayes charged the stage singing his hit like “Wanted” which has achieved over 1.5 billion on-demand career streams and two-time multi-platinum hit “I want crazy” and many more.

The night was all about five time CMA Male Vocalist of Year, 20 ACM nominations, and six-time winner of the Voice, Mr. Blake Shelton, and he didn’t disappoint. Blake Shelton kept the momentum going with a two hour set, starting off with “Neon Lights” and ending with “God Gave Me You” and a whole lot other hits in between that had the crowd singing along and dancing.

What made his performance enjoyable isn’t that Shelton can sing and write song we relate to and love to sing along to in our cars, but where he really excels is his personality and on-stage presence. Shelton is abundantly charismatic and witty. He knows how to engage a crowd. At one point he addressed a couple in the audience who just got engaged during the show and then another moment joking with a guy saying “she made you come to this concert didn’t she?” and then smoothly transitioning into the song “Doin’ What She Likes”. You leave a Blake Shelton show feeling like you spent a couple of hours with a good friend singing, and of course a whole lot of drinking. Yep, the neon light says BAR OPEN when Blake is around.

Grease is the word
Photos and review by: Michael J Mangano / ModestoView

The soundtrack to the classic film Grease and classic hits from the doo-wop years created the backdrop for a perfect show for Modesto’s Graffiti Summer celebration with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The legendary New Jersey singer is 85, yet pulls off a almost a 90min show with more than two dozen songs that we all know and remember fondly. He had the crowd at the Fruit Yard amphitheater sing along to his catalogs of hit like,“Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a Man.” and of course his big hit “Grease” . Valli was backed by a new generation of the Four Seasons as they sang and danced back up for the star.

I had to say, Valli who just turned 85 in May, was very impressive and he still has the singing chops to pull off his piercing falsetto. It is the most amazing voice he seems to do so effortlessly. You might think that many performers who have toured for decades with the attitude of” been there done that” already would have a simplified his show, but not Frakie Valli. He knows how to put on a pop rock show with a 9-piece band, light show and a massive screen that would change for every song.

They say this is the farewell tour for the Italian-American singer who entertained us through the decades from the doo-wop days and thought the disco era. We’ll remember this as one great Graffiti Summer night in Modesto.

Carrie Underwood Cry Pretty Tour

By Michael Mangano

Carrie Underwood “Cry Pretty” tour should have been called we are women and watch us kick ass! Make no mistake this was a statement tour about the lack of representation by women in country music, on the country charts, and at festivals. You can tell she wanted to show all those young girls in the audience about girl power with an all women show! If you love great harmony you will enjoy the opening act Runaway June made up of Hannah Mulholland, Naomi Cooke and Jennifer Wayne who happen to be the granddaughter of John Wayne. We have seen this talented trio play around modesto a couple of times Country Acoustic Christmas and at LAC 2017 so I knew to expect an excellent performance. The support act was Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye as Maddie and Tae who I never have seen but were equally amazing as they sang and strutted around the 360 stage which made the Oracle arena the perfect venue cause there were no bad seats. I recommend checking this talent Duo at the Stanislaus Country Fait, Monday, July 15th.

From the moment the giant screens playing a video of a burst of glitter and sparkles rose up, and Underwood stood atop a rising platform, you had the feeling this was going to be a magical performance. She let fans know that this female performer and recent mother was going to keep rising and help other women along the way. Underwood started her set with “Southbound” and ended with an encore performance of “Love Wins”. She danced and sang on every inch of that 360 stage, Performing her two hours set covering most of the hit. Underwood wanted to pay tribute to all the female country singer who came before as Maddie & Tae and Runaway June return to the stage to join Underwood to perform classic hits from past legends like Tammy Wynette Stand by your Man, Loretta Lynn’s Coal Miner’s Daughter and Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5. There was no doubt why she won American Idol some 14 years ago. What I left with is Underwood proved if you build an all-women show people will come and talent is talent plain and simple. It has been established in Hollywood women can draw an audience, so maybe slowly it can happen in country music.
