MAMAView May Madness

MAMA View By Middagh Goodwin

Very excited for all the great events coming up in May and beyond. Check out the back of the Modesto View each month and one look at the Calendar and know that there is always something to do in the Modesto Area.

With art, comedy, music and more you can’t truthfully say there is nothing to do in Modesto. There are some legendary bands hitting Modesto in May the first one is the ANGRY SAMOANS at the Brewhouse on May 17th. Formed in 1978 they were part of the legendary LA Punk scene that brought us the Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Descendents, X and more. Metal Mike(former Rock Critic) still fronts this snotty Punk band and still after all these years does not disappoint in entertaining a crowd of young and old. Joining them are Modesto favorites thrash punkers TRASH BOAT(members of Kid Mud/Before 20/Beneficial Medicine), Stockton’s favorites RED DEVIL LIE and THE CREEPOIDS(members of American Heart Throb.)

Later in the month one of the most anticipated shows to hit Modesto and Rockabilly Cruise Night at the Brewhouse is the return of REVEREND HORTON HEAT the king of American Rockabilly. The band originally formed in 1985 and is a touring machine, this is the 5th time the have played in Modesto and the second time at the Brewhouse. Touring on a brand new album “REV” released in January of this year on Victory Records. You can always expect a set of classic and new favorites a like from this powerhouse trio. Joining the Rev on May 28th are THE ATOM AGE(Asian Man Records) horn tinged 21st Century Rock and Roll; think the Sonics meet Rocket from the Crypt. Also on the Bill are THE(SECRET)HITCHERS(if you saw them with Lydia Loveless back in March you know how good they are.) female fronted Country Tinged Rockabilly and Americana from Stockton and Dj Vida Lee’s Jukebox Social spinning all night.

Ending the Month May 31st at the Brewhouse E.A.R.L.(2007 FUNK/RAWK) will be celebrating 10 years of bringing it to the masses all over the 209 and beyond and they are bringing some friends with them to make this a party you do not want to miss. PEACEABLE JONES(2007 Punk/Pop) will be reuniting to celebrate with their friends along with Los Punks del Norte and Baby Gurl.

If these two shows were all you had to look forward to in May you would have an exciting month of entertainment, but of course there is always so much more. May 2nd at the Queen Bean Nic Padilla Promotions presents a MS Benefit Show featuring Bryan DeBaets form Renegade Conspiracy, Jimmie Menezes and more. Also on May 2nd NOTHING BUT LOSERS(2011 Metal), American Witch, Forever Obscured and more will be rocking the house at Spinnakers. May 3rd THE GOOD LUCK THRIFT STORE OUTFIT(2008 Americana) will be filling up the State Theater along with Pine Box Boys, The Sumner Brothers(Canada) and Cole Thomason. The last time they played the State it sold out and you can bet it will be a packed house and a party once again. May 3rd at Spinnakers Walk Away Alpha, Hang the Kode, Broken Trojan (2013 Rock), Incisus and Decimate the Opposition. More Metal and Hard Rock at Spinnakers on May 10th brought to you by Screeching Slay Bats (2013 Comedy) with NOTHING BUT LOSERS(2011 Metal), One Last Caress, Screeching Slay and the Nekrobats, Warbus and American Heart Throb. If you are in or want to make the short drive to Turlock KCSS Presents at the Grizzly Rock on May 10th JOSH ROSENBLUM(2012 Pop Rock), The Old Refrain, Mattea Overstreet, Viva Joaquin and more for the 4th Annual Bandstand. On May 17th at Spinnakers BROKEN TROJAN(2013 Rock) are back at it again with Hybrid Z, 17Ten, Dying Image and Amenthes. NPP also has a Metal and Hard Rock show at the Other Place on May 31st with EROZION, LEVEL 12, STIGMURDER and more always fun to end the month on a Heavy Note.

Lets not forget to laugh come on out to the Brew Ha Ha on May 23rd at the Brewhouse featuring Cheryl Anderson(the Soccer Mom as seen on Nickelodeon), PX(Last Comic Standing), Dave Spivey, Noah Gain, Jason Mack, Pablo Osuguera, Dane Madden and hosted by Jimmie Menezes. My26 will be in the house once again filming all the fun and laughter for Comedy on 26! a brand new comedy TV show produced right here in Modesto.
