ABC’s Lexicon of Awesome

Lexicon of Awesome
By Efren Martinez

Martin Fry (ABC) & (New Order’s) Peter Hook at Mezzanine

It was in October when I found myself in San Francisco again at the most up close and personal venue, the Mezzanine. It comfortably holds around 1,000 club goers and has shows regularly from a variety of artists which include many Retro Artists.

This is were I got to enjoy Martin Fry from ABC once again. It was the second time I’ve experienced another fantastic performance by him, but this time he was literally within arms length from most of his fans. Martin Fry is a delightful man, in fact he has to be the most gracious and appreciative “Retro Artist” I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Martin’s (ABC) fans were just as kind, the crowd was polite and the venue staff were attentive.

During the show Martin played a great deal of his hits from The Lexicon of Love to How to be a Zillionaire. Of course an encore performance was made, the fans just couldn’t get enough of Martin’s music. Equally impressive was the opening artist, Matt Backer. Matt’s music was more of a Blues-Rock style but no doubt about it, Matt’s got some great talent and is actually part of Martin Fry’s band. Matt Backer’s new CD, Get Backer, is available on iTunes and I’ve included the link here so you can have a listen for yourself.

After the show I went backstage to chat with Martin Fry and had the pleasure of meeting his lovely wife who was on tour with him this time around. Martin shared with me that he’s started to get to work on some new music and most likely will get it done sometime next year. This is great news for all of his fans. According to his band manager, Martin is looking to come back to California in October of 2015. What a treat it would be to see him again and perhaps have him stage a show here in Modesto at our Gallo Center for The Arts. I’ll definately pass on the good word to our friends at The Gallo Center.
