National Poetry Month will have passed by the time you read this… but that’s no reason not to support local poets all year long! Second Tuesday Poetry, sponsored by the Modesto-Stanislaus Poetry Center returns on Tuesday, May 12 @ 7pm at Bookish (doors open at 6:30pm). May’s featured readers are Gustine-based Kathy Pon and Chris Olander, poet laureate emeritus of Nevada City, followed by an open mic. This event continues to be packed, all-ages, varied themes and good for the soul.
This month, Bookish is welcoming authors with local ties – come check out the discussion on Body Image and Disordered Eating Across the Lifespan with Signe Darpinian and Wendy Sterling on May 8 at 6pm. The authors will discuss relationships between our bodies and food, offering “practical, compassionate guidance” for people and families. Signe, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS), is the author of Raising Body Positive Teens and A Woman’s Guide to Menopause, Body Image and Emotional Well-Being at Midlife, among other titles. Wendy, an Eating Disorder Expert and Sports Dietician, will have her books How to Nourish Yourself through an Eating Disorder and How to Nourish your Child through an Eating Disorder available for purchase as well. Fitting this theme, we’re also welcoming local author Jordan Gabaldon and her book Nourishing Your Baby from Withinon May 9 at 11am.
… and Write Club continues! Looking for a low-stress, high-productivity writing situation? We have a vibrant group meeting every other Monday at Bookish (…next meetings scheduled for May 4 and 18 at 6:30pm), a place to tackle our individual projects and share our processes. One of our regulars, Addy Walusko, shared that she is “more than halfway through a second draft of my first novel because Write Club gave me this space to explore my creativity.” Come join us!
