BigView – Shop Small and Black Friday Tips

The BigView
By Chris Murphy
Creativity, family, friendship and fun is in the air every November in Modesto USA. I walk outside in the morning to get my morning newspaper and it is dark, chilly and amazing. I just love the feeling in the air, and the buzz in the community as we get ready for the holidays, getting ready for Thanksgiving and other fun harvest events. Pretty soon, over the Thanksgiving weekend it all seems to fade into the Christmas holidays and Hannukah celebration. It is kind of weird how it just transitions and the seasons change from warm and comfy harvest to cool and wintery in front of your eyes, just like the center pages of this magazine you are reading. Kinda freaky huh? So let’s get into it and check out the cool things to enjoy.

Black Friday Tips
Our advice, stay out of the long lines and spend this day shopping with our local stores. Or you can do like we did last year and do a downtown Modesto Pub Crawl. You will feel so relieved to not be shopping, but cruising around with your friends and enjoying the day after Thanksgiving.

November 24
Shop Local on Small Business Saturday. This is the day when it is all about our local economy. When you shop local, you are not buying a CEO their third beach house, you are helping someone put their kids through school, play soccer and support the local business people that are the first to give back to the community. These are the people that are investing in our community so we should invest in them too. We do business here with our friends and we need to keep our $ local.

One of Modesto’s best fall traditions has become the ModShop weekend, brought to life by the dynamic trip of Ruhi Sheikh, Kate Trompetter and Tricia Rosenow. You can do really creative small shopping at Mod Shop on Nov 24 from 5-9pm, located on J St between 10th and 13th St. Shoppers can browse over 60 booths featuring local artists selling art, home decor, clothing, jewelry, children’s clothes and toys, plants, pottery, vintage finds, and handcrafted foods. Enjoy food and drink at Deva Cafe, Concetta, Preservation Coffee, Ralston’s Goat, Tresetti’s and more. Downtown will be bustling with live music sponsored by ModestoView and there will be much fun, for families and super crafty stuff. Support young entrepreneurs at Mini Mod Shop located at Mistlin Gallery, our community hub. See all of the ModShop vendors at www.modshop209.com
