MAMAPreVIEW – Vote Now!

MAMA Preview
By Chris Murphy
In 2000, Chris Ricci and I wanted to showcase the amazing musical talent we have here in our area. 19 years later, we are still celebrating musical talent, and the talent keeps getting better. Music, and in particular live music, is so very important to a community. Cities and towns with a live music culture draw more creative people in. They tend to support programs like music in the schools as the arts are important to growing smart, creative kids. Music in the schools is what leads to things like MoBand in the Park, VMI Rocks and other places where people can express their musical talent.

We are on an upswing with more places hosting live music, more banquet halls, restaurants and bars showcasing live music and we even have a community stage that ModestoView built in 10th St Plaza to showcase music all year long. There are so many different kinds of music from Americana, to Pop, Indie, Jazz, Blues and Metal that have a big depth of talent. We are proud to award the MAMA Lifetime Award to Modesto’s Steve Ashman who gives so much back to our community. You can meet him in our interview on page 14.

MAMA Winner Middagh Goodwin is the Administrator of the Modesto Area Music Association and he has been doing a fantastic job making sure our bands are better networked and made sure that MAMA is the “G TO” organization to place local musicians and bands with performing opportunities. If your band is not listed in our artist database, please email at<>

On October 16, we celebrate all kinds of music in the Modesto area, and this is the night where we are all one music community. Over 200 nominees in 20 categories will be showcased at the historic State Theatre. We need you to VOTE! You pick which band, singer, event or venue will take home the coveted MAMA Carhop statuette, precision made by Beeler Industries. Show your support to the live music culture in our area by voting at

You can watch the awards beginning at 6:30 on the 16th at
